Get advice from children: Fine Texel

 In the summer holiday I have been two wonderful days to the nice island of Texel. And what's on here on this island! Today I tell about my experiences. 

Texel

Day 1

As we sat on the boat from Den Helder to Texel the sun seemed alright. The boat trip only takes 20 minutes, so we were there. We took the car because it would rain both days (afterwards we had a nice weather!).
Once on the island we drove to the town of Den Burg with many cozy shops and a market. In the afternoon we wanted to take a boat to the seals on the wad from Oudeschild. Unfortunately, most trips were already full because of the high season, but at the end of the day there was still a shrimp boat. Because we had to wait a minute, we had a delicious lunch at the restaurant 't Pakhuus in the harbor.

After that we could join the TX-20, a shrimp fishing boat. Unfortunately, we did not see the seals, but the fishermen fished everything: starfish, jellyfish, fish, crabs and of course shrimps. These could be viewed in the living bins before they went back into the sea. Everything could be held and touched. So everyone came very close to the sea creatures. The shrimps were cooked and at the end of the 2 hour trip a bag of shrimp could be taken. Really recommended! At half past seven we were back in the harbor, making it possible for us to go to dinner immediately. On our way to a nice restaurant we came along a beautiful viewpoint: the Fonteinsnol. Here there was a very nice view over the trees. In the evening we ate at De Koog where our hotel was located right in the middle of the Dunes.

Day 2

The next day we left Ecomare immediately after breakfast. In Ecomare, seals, porpoises and other marine animals can be closely monitored. Really very close! The seals could even affect you. In addition to the many larger seals, there were also a few small seals that played together, very sweet! There were also beautiful aquariums where beautiful fish, rye and starfish could be seen. After Ecomare we walked through the dunes towards the beach. Here we walked for a while and afterwards we had a wonderful meal at Paal 17 at the beach. Whole tasty lunches in a nice place and at the children's menu you got a sea creature. After that we have just rowed the island to see the lighthouse in the north. Then we drove back to the south and we still stopped at the Slufter area. What a beautiful nature area that flows into the sea.
Unfortunately, our two days flew so far, but we were so pleased that we would soon discover another Dutch island.

Tips

  • Buy a Texel E-vignette. This is a parking ticket for 7.50 euro a day, which allows you to park on the entire island. When you pay loose everywhere, you're soon over this amount (we did not get there at the end of the first day).
  • Go 2-3 days (or longer of course). There is so much to discover on Texel! Take some time
  • Book a boat trip in advance (especially during high season). This guarantees a place on the boat.
  • In good weather: rent a bike! The distances on Texel are not big, so if you have more time, you can rent a bike.

Let's Play Out!

It has been a trend for some years, but children are less likely to play outside.  That's not a good news because playing outside is not only healthy and educational but also fun.  Let's all play together together! How often do children play outside?  And how does that happen? If we can believe British research (read well: British, which does not apply to Flanders and the Netherlands)  , children are on average less than prisoners.  For example, 26% of children in question would play out for less than half an hour a week.  That's really little.  This trend would be explained by various causes.  On the one hand, it appears that parents are more cautious and see more dangers in outdoor games, on the other hand, electronic toys such as tablets are an attractive alternative for children to simply stay in.  Some researchers also say that more school work leads to less outdoor games.  A lack of safe playgrounds or a quiet street does not ...
